1% at a time

Sometimes getting out of bed can feel like climbing a mountain. Social media often portrays the “perfect life” – never feeling stressed, always waking up on time, and getting the best grades. The reality, however, is that no one has a perfect life. Sometimes the goal isn’t to achieve top marks or tick everything off your to-do list. Sometimes, the goal is simply to keep moving.

This is where the “1% philosophy” comes in. We believe it’s an important mindset for challenging the harmful effects of perfectionism. The idea is simple: small actions are still progress, even if they don’t feel significant or life-changing. You don’t have to complete the entire task; you just have to make a start.

Imagine you have a large essay due in a week, but you haven’t started it. You didn’t sleep well the night before, and you’ve woken up with a pounding headache. Instead of forcing yourself to write the whole essay, you do the 1%. You write just one paragraph. By the end of it, you’ve made progress and can feel proud that you’ve started. When you come back to it the next day, there’s already less to do than if you’d avoided it altogether.

It’s equally important to remember that rest is just as valuable as productivity. If your body is telling you it needs more sleep, listen to it. Looking after your mental wellbeing isn’t about doing as much as possible; it’s about ending the day feeling better than when it began. If you wake up exhausted but finish the day feeling more rested because you gave yourself permission to recover, that is still a success.

Recovery rarely comes from one dramatic breakthrough. More often, it grows from lots of small moments that gradually add up. Be kind to yourself on the days when even 1% feels difficult. Instead of asking yourself how you’re going to do everything, ask: “What’s one thing I can do today that my future self will thank me for?”

Sometimes, that 1% is all you need to remind yourself that you’re still moving forward.
